Carmen Callil

Personally and as a publisher, I was extremely sorry to hear of the death of Carmen Callil. The friend of several Sandstone authors, she was a remarkable and visionary publisher, founder of Virago, and supporter of many authors who have reason to be grateful for her guidance. I had a brief correspondence with her about one of our titles, and felt privileged to be in touch.

My bookshelves are enhanced by many of those iconic green-backed Virago paperbacks, which brought to much greater – and deserved – notice many neglected women authors.
