The Master of Chaos: Short Story Competition (of sorts)

To celebrate the launch of Pauline Melville’s new short story collection, The Master of Chaos, we’re holding a short story writing competition (of sorts) on Twitter. Read on for full competition details.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

Write the first and last sentences (yes – that’s all we want to see!) of a short story using either of the following prompts

THE MASTER OF CHAOS

Or

TWO OF YOUR FAVOURITE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS MEET IN A WAITING ROOM

Choose any genre you like, and make your story happy or sad, weird or domestic, topical, historical or universal - or anything in between!

HOW TO ENTER:

Post your entry to Twitter, using your own account. To be considered, your tweet MUST include #MasterOfChaos and the graphic available to download below. The competition will open on Thursday 1st July and close on Thursday 15th July.

JUDGE AND PRIZE:

The competition will be judged by the Sandstone Press staff. They will draw up a shortlist of three and announce the winner a week or so after the deadline.

The winner will receive £50 and a copy of The Master of Chaos. The two runners up will also receive a copy of the book.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Work must be original and previously unpublished.
  • Entrants must be 18 years or over.
  • The competition is open to residents of the UK aged 18 or over, excluding employees of Sandstone Press, their families, or anyone professionally connected to the competition. The prize will only be sent to an address within the UK.
  • All entries must be published on Twitter and must be within the 280 character limit, including #MasterOfChaos
  • All entries must include the imagery below - right click and click 'save image as...' to download the graphic
  • Only one entry per person. Once sent, entries cannot be altered or revised. Entries exceeding one tweet will not be considered.
  • If you need to withdraw your entry, please delete your tweet as soon as possible, ensuring this is done before the deadline.
  • Anyone found using multiple accounts will be disqualified.
  • No simultaneous submissions.
  • Please ensure your entry complies with Twitter’s rules and policies.
  • Hard deadline is 9am 15/07/21, UK time.
  • Decisions of judge and Sandstone are final. We regret we cannot enter into correspondence about individual entries, or give feedback on stories outside the shortlist.
  • Sandstone reserves first online publication rights only - full copyright reverts to author.
