Along the Amber Route and The Wolves of Leninsky Prospekt shortlisted for BOOKMARK Festival’s Book of the Year Award.

The BOOKMARK Book Festival has announced the 2020 shortlist for their Book of the Year Award. The inaugural shortlist features six titles across non-fiction, crime, historical fiction, literary fiction and young adult fiction and includes two titles from ourselves at Sandstone Press!

The winner will receive an invitation to the next festival and a bespoke silver bookmark featuring the BOOKMARK bird, designed by Blairgowrie’s silversmith Sarah Cave.

The judging panel consists of Christine Findlay, Pat Richards, Kate Davies, Alan Taylor and Rosemary Goring. The shortlist also features Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce, The Bear Pit by S. G. MacLean, Death in the East by Abir Mukherjee and Orphans of the Tide by Struan Murray.

On Sarah Armstrong’s The Wolves of Leninsky Prospekt, the judges said: The novel takes its reader down various avenues of deception so we are never quite sure, like Martha, what the real story is.’

On C. J. Schüler’s Along the Amber Route, the judges said: What a fascinating trip the writer takes us on – through layers of history, geography, memoir, observation – to bring to life not just the incredible substance that amber is, but the overlooked histories of the road the amber trade followed. […] A fascinating read.’

Congratulations to all on the shortlist and best of luck to Sarah Armstrong and C. J. Schüler! The winner will be announced via Facebook, Twitter and on the BOOKMARK Book Festival website on 4 October at 12 noon.
