Gears for Queers: Sandstone Press acquires cycling memoir by queer couple Abigail and Lilith

Sandstone Press has acquired World English and translation rights to Gears for Queers by Abigail Melton and Lilith Cooper. The book is scheduled for publication in June 2020 to coincide with Pride Month.

Keen to see some of Europe, queer couple Abigail and Lilith get on their old bikes and start pedalling. Along flat fens and up Swiss Alps, they will meet new friends and exorcise old demons as they push their bodies – and their relationship – to the limit.

Assistant Publisher Kay Farrell says ‘Lilith and Abigail have a warm and lively way of writing. They are very frank about the pains and joys of cycling and their main theme is that cycling really can be for everyone. It’s a delight to be bringing this book to readers.’

Lilith and Abigail are equally pleased to be working with Sandstone. ‘We never imagined we’d write a book and are thrilled to be able to add our voices to the growing chorus of people challenging ideas of what a cyclist is, and what they look like. We feel extremely privileged to be working with a proudly independent Scottish publisher like Sandstone and are in equal measures excited and terrified to share our journey with readers.’

Abigail and Lilith are a queer couple who are artists, community organisers and service industry workers. Lilith grew up cycling around their hometown of Cambridge and when they met, transplanted Abigail’s desire to walk the world onto two wheels. This is their first book – born from a series of vegan recipe zines from their first cycle tour. They live in Kirkcaldy, Fife.
