Along the Amber Route: Malbork

From Gdańsk, I took a train south to Malbork, where I found the stronghold of the Teutonic Knights in a scruffy park hemmed in by housing blocks. Above its towering walls of red brick loomed a battlemented tower and the apse of the great cathedral of St Mary. For centuries, the tall lancet recess at its eastern end held a colossal statue of the Virgin that was visible for miles across the surrounding plains, but since the artillery battle that raged here for two months at the end of the Second World War, it had stood as empty as the niches that once contained the Buddhas of Bamiyan.
