The Wood That Built London: Croydon

[on 1 April 1965], Croydon, which covered the surviving fragments of the Archbishop’s Woods, was removed from Surrey to become the southernmost of the London boroughs. The Urban District of Penge was abolished, and the area was transferred from Kent to the London Borough of Bromley. Responsibility for town planning, roads, housing and the environment was shared between the GLC and the various London boroughs. For the first time in history, all the remaining parts of the North Wood came under one unitary authority.
