5 Brilliant Non Fiction Reads for Book Clubs

If your book group tends to read fiction, but would like to give non-fiction a try, here are 5 fantastic memoirs you won't be able to stop talking about.

1) Negative Capability by Michèle Roberts

Following a series of devastating rejections, Michèle Roberts began keeping an account of her life in the hope it might help mend her shattered sense of self. In this intimate and wryly honest journal she reflects on cities and countryside, loss and love, food, friendships, sisterhood, pleasure and memories, her abiding relationship with France and with literature.

2) The Electric Woman by Tessa Fontaine

When her mother had a series of strokes, Tessa Fontaine couldn’t stand to watch her mother disappear. The Electric Woman tells Tessa’s story of joining America’s last travelling freak show, and learning to perform death-defying acts in order to come to terms with her mother’s illness. In her life-affirming memoir, Tessa finds hope and companionship among sword swallowers and snake charmers.

3) The Restless Wave by Helen Bellany

Helen Bellany, twice married to the artist John Bellany, recalls their lives together in Scotland, London, and Italy, John’s rise from rebellious art student to internationally recognised artist, and the human cost inherent in creating great art.

4) The Easternmost House by Juliet Blaxland

The Easternmost House is a stunning memoir, describing a year on the Easternmost edge of England, and exploring how we can preserve delicate ecosystems and livelihoods in the face of rapid coastal erosion and environmental change.

5) Marram by Leonie Charlton

From the southern tip of Barra to the ancient stone circle of Callanish, Leonie and her friend Shuna ride off the beaten tracks on their beloved Highland ponies, Ross and Chief. In deeply poetic prose, she describes not only the beauties of the Hebridean landscape, its spare, penetrating light and its people, but also confronts the ghost of her mother and their fractured relationship.
