Please read these guidelines in full before making a submission. Submissions should made electronically. Please do not post hard copy submissions to the office. Those which do not adhere to the guidelines may not be considered.
Sandstone Press publishes fiction and non-fiction for adults. We do not publish books for children or young adults, drama or poetry.
Who can submit?
Authors and agents are welcome to submit non-fiction and fiction to Sandstone Press, but should be aware that the Sandstone Press publishing programme is full for at least a year ahead. If an author is submitting work personally, but is normally represented by an agent, they should provide this information.
We are interested in literary fiction, women’s fiction, crime novels and thrillers, any of which may have a historical setting or be set in the future. We do not currently publish in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, erotica, general historical fiction and horror. Most works of fiction are 60,000-120,000 words. We do not usually consider submissions which are significantly outside this range and are therefore unable to consider novellas for publication. Authors are advised to look at our website and judge whether their work is suitable for our lists.
Our list currently includes literary biography, memoir, outdoor and Scottish interest. We are also interested in titles potentially aimed at a younger market in these areas and in history, music and popular science.
Agents are welcome to contact us directly. An introductory email should outline the type of book being proposed and give a brief biography of the author, including their publishing history.
Both pages of the submission form (download below) should be completed and sent with a short covering email or letter, a synopsis (fiction) summary (non-fiction) and no more than 5,000 words of the book; this should include the opening chapter and any other section of the author’s choosing. Please do not submit more than one book at a time.
The synopsis and text should be sent as Word attachments, not in the body of the email, and without drawings or photographs. The author should let us know in his or her covering email if any are intended to be included.
Please send your submissions by email to our Assistant Publisher, Kay Farrell, at firstname.lastname@example.org
All attachments should be Microsoft Word documents. It’s appreciated if submissions are in the following format, which is in-line with Sandstone’s house style:
• One and a half spacing
• Calibri, Times New Roman or a similar plain font
• Indent for new paragraph
• No additional line spaces between paragraphs or lines of dialogue
• Line space to mark new section – no indent at beginning of new section
• Normal margins
We always acknowledge receipt of scripts. We try to respond promptly and will let agents and authors know if a text is being sent to an external Reader for a preliminary assessment. It may take several months for us to make a final decision about a book. Please contact us again if you get no reply.
